bowie’s best vocal until the epic title track of station to station. still one of his best ever songs – and one of the most underrated. the hunger city mentioned in ‘diamond dogs’ could be almost anywhere in the world. this is not a concept album – it is mostly about being alone and unhappy in an alien city. drugs help you get through the night – but only make the days worse.

    hes my air xx

Referring to the notes above, agree that any demo of this would be included as Diamond Dogs outtake, rather than Aladdin Sane. The only song that is close to this on AS is the title track – Aladdin Sane. If you consider the songs on Aladdin Sane, the similarities to this song are not there. Of course, Pin-ups is considerably different as the songs are covers of the 1967-1973 London scene and most of the songs are very basic. (See Emily Play being the exception). Clearly Diamond Dogs!

This song, and album could only be recorded ONCE.
There’s no way this recording could be replicated.
What I am happy about, is that I was alive when the album existed.

Jumping around all the albums – ‘Dogs, Ziggy, Station to Station, Hunky D, incredible Aladdin Sane, Scary Monsters, and all the rest, nothing quite beats ‘Sweet Thing’. Must have listened to it 100s of times, maybe 1000s, and never get tired of it. For me it’s the ultimate Bowie song…epic…visits every musical genre, and moves me every time I hear it, after 30 plus years. What more can we want from music?!

‘Is it nice in your snowstorm…?’

Happy Birthday David, I’ve been a 40 year fan and have never waivered (ok a little in the early 80’s china girl, let’s dance et all) having said that I never tire of your music even after all these years, I can’t say the same for all my musical favorites.

This song reminds me of my father, who was a black man, who was on pcp. He was a hippy an I can remember him drunk an high dancing off this song when I was young. I am 41 now. I am crying right now. I miss him so much. What a sweet thing huh?

“On the street where you live I could not hold up my head. For I put all I had in another bed. On another floor in the back of a car. In a cellar like a church with the door ajar. Well I guess we must be lookin’ for a different time, but we can’t stop tryin’ till we break up our minds……We’ll buy some drugs and watch a band and jump in the river holding hands ! Was that good for you Biker cheese ? RSVP lol
